Bangkok is HOT and other musings.

As we wait to check into our next hostel I’m going write this to catch everyone up. It’s been three days since we arrived at the Suvarnabhumi airport. We got in around 2am then proceeded to get into the wrong taxi and once we arrived at the hotel we found out that we had booked the wrong nights. Once we paid for another night we got some sleep and woke up ready to go exploring. We walked around and got some food, which to be honest was fine… yes just fine. Personally, as a vegetarian by the end of the day, I had grown tired of mushrooms. After that, we sat at a bus stop? Not sure if was a bus stop but we sat next to Yo.

Yo is a young Thai native that helped guide Steven and I to the nearest bus station. He paid for our taxi to the bus station, he asked strangers for navigation help, and he didn’t speak any English. As we ran onto the bus leaving for the airport we looked back and thanked Yo. Placing our hands in prayer position and bowing slightly and ungracefully. I wish we could have done more for him. In that moment I wanted to give him something like a BurningMan (BM) sticker (not sure we could have explained to him what it was) but we had no stickers or time. Afterwards, Steven and I vowed to always help foreigners in America if they look lost or confused like we did.

Continuing on… we then adventured to the Jim Thompson house. Jim Thompson served in the US Army and got stationed in Bangkok. Jim fell in love with Thailand and tried to convince his wife to move with him but she declined twice (basically what I learned on the tour). The house’s architecture was a combination of both western and Thai style creating a unique flare to the exterior and interior. Also, Jim had a unique eye for colors and created an international market for Thai silk and helped establish a world renown silk company. Steven wanted a shirt but ended up not buying one, which I think he regrets now. Wearing silk during the hot and humid day is ideal for sure.

After learning about Jim, architecture, and silk we went to the MLK center where we got some traditional Thai food and walked around the mall. Thai malls are a big attraction for locals, and we’re pretty sure it’s due to the AC. The mall didn’t entertain us that much but brought to the light the consumer culture in Bangkok. We saw lots of BM clothes but decided to hold off because we have no extra room in our bags at the moment and we still have a year till the next burn. After reminiscing on BM we went to the train station and bought our tickets to Changi Mai for the 16th and for returning back to the hotel.

During the train ride home, Steven made friends with a gregarious monk. And it was like 100 degrees.

The next day basically was awesome. We had amazing vegetarian food at the Chamlong Asoke – vegetarian food court and Su ki Jeh Ru Yi vegetarian restaurant in China town. Seriously the best food I’ve had in awhile. Although I do find it interesting that the Thai don’t eat differently for breakfast, lunch, and dinner or I just haven’t figure out the difference yet. Besides food, we biked around Prapadaeng (The Green Lung of Bangkok), which was just what I needed because I hurt my foot a day before I left for traveling (so walking is a pain).

Now let’s talk about foot pain. Traveling with foot pain is a real game changer. The game became a constant worry about what is wrong and if I am developing a stress fracture by continuing to sight see walk everywhere. But nonetheless I decided to buy some Hokas at a mall and now my feet are fine (or am I okay because I took some Naproxen and Tylenol- who cares I feel better). Also, I bought these awesome toe socks that I pretty much want to wear every day of my life.

Alright well that’s it for now. Peace Kittens.

From Black Rock City with Love

We recently returned from Burning Man!There is nothing either of us has experienced which is quite like returning to our "Home" away from home year after year. This year we camped with a group of friends, some old and some new. We were blessed to be with a group of self-reliant caring, thoughtful individuals. A couple of whom got engaged "on playa" this year, Congrats to both Katie and Blake!!! Going to Burning Man for me was a profound experience of personal growth and an introduction to a community of like minded individuals. I was more a consumer at the time (forgetting all my food the first year) and since then it's evolved. Becoming an experience which I help build and maintain the experience through volunteering, gifting, and emotional/physical support of other citizens. I could share a plethora of stories from this year, but they wouldn't really hold the attention of the reader. The average story from Burning Man meanders without plot and exclud

Oh man! Sometimes you get that sweet spot where you are so engaged in the moment it's impossible to think about future or the past. just that moment. We're having a few of those moments here in Myanmar. This place is a lot of things, and sometimes they come all at once. We just got on the bus to inlay Lake, I'm excited to see what comes next.
